Install Star Citizen with the RSI Launcher

Installation is easier when your account, referral code, SSD space and expectations are in order first. This guide covers the essentials.

Install in five steps

  1. Check game access, Windows and the hardware requirements. A free RSI account alone does not grant access outside a verified Free Fly.
  2. Open the official RSI download page and install the RSI Launcher. Avoid third-party download portals.
  3. Sign in with your RSI account and select LIVE. PTU/EPTU require separate access and additional storage.
  4. Set the correct SSD folder in the launcher settings. Allow more than 150 GB of free space plus update headroom, then choose Install.
  5. Wait until the download completes and choose Launch Game. Continue with the first-login guide.

Download or launch not working?

Check RSI service status first, then the error code and install path. Use Settings → Games → LIVE → Verify and let it finish. Adjust concurrent downloads only following the official instructions.

Prepare your account before installing

Before downloading, create your free RSI account and check the referral code. RSI allows a missing code to be added only within 24 hours of account creation; an associated code cannot be changed.

Once the account is ready, you can wait for a Free Fly or consider a Starter Pack only when you are ready to play.

Download and install the launcher

Download the RSI Launcher from the official RSI website. This site does not host its own download. If in doubt, return to the official source.

Choose an SSD for the installation. Star Citizen can have long loading or asset-streaming pauses, and using an HDD makes the experience noticeably worse.

  • Download the launcher only from the official source.
  • Choose an installation folder on an SSD.
  • Leave enough free space for updates.

Sign in and review the initial settings

After signing in, confirm that the launcher works correctly and the game is fully updated. In the game, review the graphics, audio, input device and keyboard layout settings.

Do not change everything at once. Start with a few adjustments so you can tell which settings actually help.

Typical beginner problems

Typical early problems include long loading times, confusing menus, getting lost in a city or being unsure how to retrieve a ship. These are common and do not mean you are doing everything wrong.
