Space flight basics

Learning to fly in Star Citizen

Flying in Star Citizen involves more than applying thrust. Learn spatial awareness, speed control, landing and Quantum Travel step by step.

Summary

  • Controlled flying matters more than spectacular manoeuvres when you are learning.
  • Takeoff and landing are the most useful skills to practise before attempting serious missions.
  • Quantum Travel connects distant locations, but requires a selected destination and some patience.

Smooth inputs are safer

Many beginners lose ships at hangar doors, on landing pads or while travelling too fast—not in combat. Rushed inputs leave little room to recover.

Practise with small movements, maintain clearance and watch how your ship responds. A controlled departure is more valuable than a fast one.

Practise take-off and landing

Begin at a hangar or station, fly a short distance and land again. Repetition helps more than travelling far.

Reduce your speed before landing, approach deliberately and avoid last-second corrections.

  • Check your surroundings before takeoff.
  • Use gentle thrust when leaving the hangar.
  • Keep a safe distance from walls and other ships.
  • Land slowly and keep the ship level.

Understand Quantum Travel

Quantum Travel is used for long-distance journeys. Select a destination, align the ship and wait until the jump is ready. Some destinations require an intermediate stop or a clearer position.

If it does not engage, check the selected target, distance, alignment and whether an obstruction is blocking the route.

Practise without expensive mistakes

Use a small ship, avoid valuable cargo and postpone complex missions while learning. Crashes are common while you are practising.

Once you feel more confident, combine flight training with simple delivery missions.
