How game access works
For regular access, you generally need a package that includes the game, often a Starter Pack. Contents and prices can change, so this page does not promise a specific price.
Always check the official store to see exactly what is included. The distinction between a Game Package and a Standalone Ship is especially important.
A Free Fly as a free trial
During an active Free Fly, you can test Star Citizen before buying. That lets you judge performance, controls and the alpha state for yourself.
A test reduces the risk of a poor purchase. If the game or its performance does not suit you, waiting is entirely reasonable.

Why you should not overspend
Star Citizen offers many ships and upgrades, but you do not need them to start. Experience, orientation and patience matter more than a large ship.
If you continue playing, you can make a better-informed decision later. Starting conservatively is usually sensible.
Which costs are optional?
Additional ships, upgrades, skins and other store content are not required for game access. An RSI subscription is also a voluntary support program, not a mandatory monthly fee to play.
